Named one of Out Magazine’s “Out 100” and Filmmaker Magazine's "25 New Faces of Independent Film," PJ Raval is an award-winning filmmaker whose credits include TRINIDAD (Showtime, LOGO), the highly charged & not-safe-for-work CHRISTEENE video collection (praised by the Hollywood Reporter as "...something you wish you could desperately un-see."), and BEFORE YOU KNOW IT his latest documentary following the lives of three gay seniors (SXSW, Winner Best Documentary Chicago LGBT Film Festival). Hailed by indieWIRE as “…a crucial new addition to the LGBT doc canon,” BEFORE YOU KNOW IT screened theatrically both nationally and internationally and broadcast premiered as the season finale of America Reframed on PBS The World Channel. 

PJ is currently in production on JUSTICE FOR JENNIFER (working title) a feature documentary that follows the controversial murder of a Filipina transwoman by an accused U.S. marine. JUSTICE FOR JENNIFER is currently supported by the Sundance Film Institute, Bertha Foundation, Arcus Foundation, Fork Films and Ford Foundation. PJ is also part of the producing team behind the upcoming feature narrative DISCREET directed by Travis Mathews (Interior.Leather.Bar, I Want You Love).

Also an award-winning cinematographer, PJ’s work has earned him awards such as the ASC Charles B. Lang Jr. Heritage Award as well as the Haskell Wexler Award for Best Cinematography. PJ’s work includes the Academy Award-nominated & Sundance Grand Jury Award winner TROUBLE THE WATER as well as the Independent Spirit Award-nominated ROOM. PJ’s recently lensed LOVE & AIR SEX directed by Bryan Poyser as well as PRIMATE CINEMA: APES AS FAMILY the first film created for a chimpanzee audience (Sundance, Berlinale).

PJ is a 2015 Guggenheim Fellow and a 2016 Firelight Media Fellow. In his spare time he likes to post pictures of his cat on Instagram.
